R.I.P Graeme Bell

(7th September 1914 – 13th June 2012)

The ARIA community is saddened by the passing of Graeme Bell on 13th June 2012 at the age of 97.

Often referred to as the father of jazz in Australia, Bell was born in Melbourne into a musical family. He made over 1500 recordings, throughout a career spanning more than seven decades. Beginning his career in the 1930’s, Bell enjoyed success both here and in Europe in the 1950’s with the Australian Jazz Band.

Upon moving to Sydney, he formed the Graeme Bell All Stars jazz band.

He received the Order of Australia in 1990, for his services to Australian music. The Australian Jazz Awards are also known as The Bells, in his honour.

Graeme Bell was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 1997 alongside Paul Kelly and The Bee Gees.
