The ARIA community is saddened by the passing of George Cooks on 6th December 2012.
George was well known in Sydney throughout the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s as he ran Rowe St Records, a specialist classical music record store. During these three decades, many international classical artists visiting Sydney would visit Rowe St Records and speak with George Cooks.
Other notable visitors to Rowe St Records include Bob Hawke, Paul Keating and Laurie Carmichael. Many people gathered informally at the store on a regular basis to talk about the latest releases and to swap records with friends.
He received an award from Polygram Records in 1988 in acknowledgement of twenty six years of support for the music industry.
Cooks was known by many people, including senior bureaucrats, business people and union leaders as one of the best sources for classical music and opera recordings in the country.
ARIA would like to extend its sincere condolences to the family and friends of George Cooks.
