Australian music’s biggest night of celebration is almost here, with nominees and ARIA Awards co-hosts revealed for the 2022 ARIA Awards in partnership with YouTube today via live stream, presented by Nine’s Brooke Boney.
The best of the best in homegrown music will be celebrated across 27 categories on Thursday, 24 November. Held at Sydney’s iconic live music venue, The Hordern Pavilion on Gadigal land, the 2022 ARIA Awards will be available to watch live and free across Australia on Channel 9 and 9Now and streamed internationally across YouTube.
In the first live and in-person show since 2019, this year's awards will be co-hosted by eight-time ARIA Awards-winner, Aussie-born international icon Natalie Imbruglia, joined by internationally loved singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi. The pair will recognise, pay tribute and celebrate the achievements of the incredibly talented artists and industry professionals in Australia’s music community.
Natalie was propelled into the limelight in the 1990s, kicking off her career in music with the chart-topping Torn, which reached #2 on the UK and Australian singles charts, #1 airplay around the world and #1 on the Billboard Airplay chart for 14 weeks, with more than a million copies sold in the UK alone. The single was taken from her subsequent ARIA #1 album, 1997’s Left Of The Middle, which went on to sell over seven million copies worldwide and celebrates its 25th anniversary this November. Natalie has accumulated sales of over 10 million albums and one billion streams, five UK Top 10 singles, 10 UK Top 40 singles, one UK #1 album, three UK Top 10 albums, two BRIT Awards, eight ARIA Awards, three MTV Music Awards, one Billboard Music Award, three GRAMMY™️ nominations and more.
Natalie said: “I am beyond excited to be returning home to Australia to co-host this year’s ARIA Awards. This November marks the 25th anniversary of my first album, Left Of The Middle, so it will be a celebration for me in many ways. It will be a fun night with Lewis Capaldi as my co-host and honouring all the incredible Australian artists this year. Cannot wait to see you there on 24 November.”
Co-hosting and performing live at the ARIA Awards in Sydney, Scottish superstar Lewis Capaldi has been on tour since the release of his blockbuster single Someone You Loved in 2019, which has recorded over 13.1 billion streams worldwide. The breakthrough single was the longest-running UK Top 10 single by a British artist ever, spending seven weeks at #1. His album Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent was the biggest selling UK album of 2019 and 2020. With over 25 billion combined global streams, Capaldi is a two-time BRIT Award winner and GRAMMY™️ nominee. Returning to Australia for the first time since his 2020 tour, Lewis’s ARIA Awards co-host and performance announcement comes on the heels of the release of his brand-new single Forget Me, which debuted on the UK charts at #1.
Lewis Capaldi said “Buzzing to be coming back over to Australia for the first time since 2020! Such an honour to be asked to co-host the ARIA Awards with the incredible Natalie Imbruglia! I’m pinning every single one of my hopes on winning an award as well because it’s very, very unlikely after hosting it I’m ever going to be invited back again, perhaps even into the country. Can’t wait to see you all soon!”
Global superstars RÜFÜS DU SOL are closing another huge year with seven ARIA Awards nominations for their fourth album Surrender, claiming nominations for Album of the Year, Best Group, Best Pop Release, Best Dance/Electronic Release, Best Video presented by YouTube, Song of the Year presented by YouTube and Producer – Best Produced Album presented by Neumann. In 2021 and 2022 the band played the biggest shows of their career, including three sold out nights at Banc of California Stadium, Red Rocks and New York’s Forest Hills Stadium.
Cementing themselves among the hottest Australian artists of the past 12 months, Melbourne four-piece Amyl and the Sniffers unveiled Comfort To Me, breaking new ground for the band by debuting at #2 on the ARIA Albums Chart. With lead vocalist Amy Taylor’s energy adding to the Sniffers’ success, the bands critically acclaimed album has secured six ARIA Awards nominations this year: Album of the Year, Best Group, Best Rock Album, Best Australian Live Act presented by Heaps Normal, Producer – Best Produced Album presented by Neumann (with Dan Luscombe), and Best Video presented by YouTube (with John Angus Stewart).
With 12 ARIA Awards already under his belt, Flume has had a mammoth year with his third album Palaces, landing at #3 on the charts and scoring over 85 million streams to date. For the 2022 ARIA Awards, Flume has secured six nominations for Best Solo Artist, Best Dance/Electronic Release, Producer – Best Produced Album presented by Neumann, Best Pop Release, Best Video presented by YouTube (with Michael Hili), and Song of The Year presented by YouTube.
It has been a huge year for Baker Boy, international superstar The Kid LAROI and Vance Joy, who are each nominated for five awards this year. Previous ARIA Awards winner, Sydney-born singer songwriter Julia Jacklin has also scored four nominations alongside King Stingray and Luude.
Garnering reviews globally from the likes of Pitchfork, The New York Times, NME and NPR Music for the album PRE PLEASURE, 2022 will mark the first time Julia Jacklin has been nominated for Best Solo Artist, alongside leading artists Baker Boy, Budjerah, Courtney Barnett, Daniel Johns, Flume, Ruel, The Kid LAROI, Thelma Plum and Vance Joy.
